AERTEC Solutions - vendor advisor for the Royal Commission restructuring of Jubail Airport in Saudi Arabia

By: Carl-Friedrich Flothmann

AERTEC Solutions will be the vendor advisor for the Royal Commission for Jubail and Yanbu for the restructuring of Jubail Airport in Saudi Arabia for future civil use

  • The international engineering and consultancy firm specialised in aeronautics will develop the concept design for the new airport infrastructure at Jubail, located on the east coast of Saudi Arabia. Until now this facility has been used by the military, and it will now be converted into a civil airport.
  • AERTEC Solutions has been working on the development of the masterplan and business plan for this airport since 2014. It is currently operated by the Saudi Arabian Navy. A significant investment will be made in order to ensure the airport is operational for commercial aviation in 2020.
  • AERTEC Solutions's experience in airport planning and design has been fundamental in winning this new contract, which will be carried out in conjunction with the local Saudi firms Saudconsult and Al-Naim Consultant Engineers Office (ACE), and with the collaboration of the international firm KPMG.
  • AERTEC Solutions is thus strengthening its strategic positioning as an international firm specialised in the airport engineering and consultancy area in the Middle East.

The Royal Commission for Jubail and Yanbu, owner of Jubail Airport in Saudi Arabia, has awarded AERTEC Solutions the contract for the planning and concept design development of the new infrastructure which will equip it for commercial aircraft operations from 2020. This airport, located on the east coast of Saudi Arabia, has been operated by the Ministry of Defence to date, and has basically been used for military purposes, along with handling some private operations.

At the end of last year, the Spanish international engineering and consultancy firm specialised in aeronautics was commissioned to advance the design of the civil works, including new taxiways, aircraft parking aprons, VIP & Cargo terminals, a control tower, a fire extinction service building and access links to the airport, along with other items. These concept designs will be developed in conjunction with two local firms, Saudconsult and Al-Naim Consultant Engineers Office (ACE).

AERTEC Solutions will assume the role of project manager in 12 months’ time in its capacity as the main vendor advisory firm. In conjunction with the international firm KPMG, it will provide advice to the Royal Commission for Jubail and Yanbu on the most suitable management and development formulas for the project, including private sector participation.

AERTEC Solutions has already carried out work for Jubail Airport in the past, including developing its masterplan and business plan. Its mission now consists of moving forward with the definition of the new infrastructure so that an international tender can be launched to find potential investors and operators who can perform the works and the airport’s subsequent operation during a suitable concession period.

Carlos Berenguer, Aviation General Director at AERTEC Solutions, values this new contract highly because, "it allows us to carry on consolidating our position in one of the main focal points for air traffic growth in the coming years, the Middle East. The Jubail Airport project is supported byf the General Authority of Civil Aviation (GACA) and the Navy, which is essential for its success. This project is added to our experience in airport planning in regions like Latin America and Europe, and will be one of our best credentials as we continue to increase our international presence, which already accounts for more than 75% of the company's airport business".

AERTEC Solutions is thus consolidating its strategic positioning as an international firm specialised in airport engineering and consultancy in the Middle East, where it not only has references in Saudi Arabia, but also in countries like the United Arab Emirates, Qatar, Kuwait and Jordan, among others.
